Vintage Shops in Rome

When I first moved to Rome in 2001, I could count on one hand the number of vintage shops in Rome.

Yes, Rome has always had antique shops, but I mean places to get second-hand clothes, accessories and even household items.

In the last 20 years, I have seen vintage, thrift, and second-hand shops popping up all over Rome's historic center.

Vintage Shops in Rome - where to find those hidden gems

Until about 20 years ago, Rome had a few shops that would sell refurbished high-end brand name items at a still very high price.

These shops didn't interest me.

I figured if I wanted things like that, I could get them at outlets, and they'd be new.

Plus, these shops did not really offer much of a bargain.

There was one weekly flea market and there were a few scant places to get second-hand goods, but not that many.

Maybe because the economy has changed, or because there is now a big interest in Rome Shopping Tours, I have seen an explosion in second-hand and vintage shops in Rome.

Based on all my years helping visitors (hotel guests, friends, family) with their shopping needs and questions, and doing so much of my own research, here are some of my ideas where to find:

Vintage shops in Rome - the real deal

True vintage shops in Rome were not really much of thing until recently.

Buying used items was less part of Italian culture than it is in some other cultures. 

Now, I can barely keep up with how many small vintage shops in Rome I see just walking through different neighborhoods.

Here are some of my favorites:

Moll Flanders

Easily accessible in the center of the Monti neighborhood, Moll Flanders sells new and used clothes, shoes and accessories for both men and women.

Lesley Luxury Vintage

Lesley Luxury Vintage has two locations in Rome, focusing on high quality pieces from well-known designers.

You'll find mainly women's wear here, as well as a great selection of bags and other accessories.

Blue Goose

Blue Goose is a vintage boutique in the heart of Monti, specializing in unique items from top fashion brands.

You'll find only women's clothing and accessories in this vintage shops in Rome.

Twice Vintage

If you prefer a more eclectic collection when visiting vintage shops in Rome, try Twice Vintage in Trastevere.

They have both men's and women's clothing and accessories in a great location.

Vintachic

Vintachic specializes in vintage wedding dresses, as well as other vintage evening/special occasion pieces.

They also have a selection of vintage men's suits, shirts and accessories, and even offer rental options!

L'armadio di Oliver

L'Armadio di Oliver sells pre-loved children's clothes for ages 0-10 in the heart of Rome in the Monti neighbourhood, with mainly French and Danish brands.

PIFEBO

With two locations in Rome, Pifebo has established themselves as one of the best vintage shops in Rome.

You will find well-curated rooms full of shoes, bags, leather jackets, jewellery, and more.

While you can see new arrivals and even shop on their website, vintage-shopping lovers should head to the store and enjoy the browsing experience.

Ciao Vintage

Ciao Vintage is a family-owned business which buys and sells high-end luxury designer bags and accessories, as well as antiques.

Revolution Vintage Roma

Revolution Vintage specializes in high-end vintage bags and accessories, think Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada and much more.

Flamingo Vintage

Flamingo Vintage is a great second-hand boutique store, with a fun selection of colorful vintage women's clothing and accessories.

This store is also in Monti, so you could easily make a day out of exploring all the vintage shops in Rome in this area!

Omero e Cecilia

Omero e Cecilia has a bit of everything, you'll need to dedicate some time to this store so you can look at all the items they have in store!

Le Vesti di Messalina

Le Vesti di Messalina has mainly men's clothing in their store, with classic brands, athletic-wear, leather jackets and denim to browse through.

Cinzia

At Cinzia you'll find vintage clothing and accessories for women, with a focus on pieces from the 1960's, 70's and 80's in a fun store.

King size Vintage

King Size Vintage is a great source of vintage men's wear, with a focus on sportswear and athleisure clothing, from top brands like Versace, Gucci and Ferragamo as well as less-famous names.

Second-hand/thrift shops in Rome

Humana Vintage

Humana Vintage has stores located across Italy, with three stores in Rome. They collect donations of clothes, sending suitable items to Africa and the rest are sold in their stores at affordable prices to financially support their humanitarian projects.

mercato Monti Urban Market

Mercato Monti Urban Market is a weekend indoor market in Monti that takes place most weekends September through June.

I've included this in my list of vintage shops in Rome because it is much more than just a market, with a big selection of artists, stylists and designers running stalls with top quality vintage and second-hand clothing and more!

SITENNE

If you're looking for vintage shops in Rome that offer something for everyone, Sitenne is a great option.

You will find a lot of variety and very affordable prices, with men's and women's second-hand clothing, costume jewellery, accessories, and shoes.

Closed Sunday and Monday.

VIA DEL GOVERNO VECCHIO

Via del Governo Vecchio is a long, winding shopping street behind Piazza Navona with lots of vintage shops in Rome to browse. I've mentioned some of them on this page.

The street is fairly well-dotted with second-hand shops that are crammed with jeans, bags, and plenty of leather goods to boot.

Individual shop hours vary but even just walking along this street is a fun adventure, and you'll find plenty of other shops here as well, such as those selling perfumes, food, drink and more!

Flea markets in Rome

PORTA PORTESE

Rome's most famous flea market is called "Porta Portese".

Named for a specific city gate, the market actually takes up a much larger area once a week on Sunday.

In the last few decades, it's kind of become more of a junky market with many fewer quality antiques, and a lot more cheap clothes and household gadgets.

It can be a fun place to browse if you have a lot of patience.

And if you have a good eye and keep at it, you may well find some gems.

VIA SANNIO

If you want more of a daily street market, especially one dealing in inexpensive and used clothing, head to via Sannio (near the San Giovanni Metro stop). 

You'll find plenty here, from military garb to shoes, bags to vinatge and second-hand clothing, as well as food items.

Vintage Market Roma

The Vintage Market Roma is a traveling market, with events taking place regularly - make sure to check their website here for the details of their upcoming market events.

As well as vintage clothing, there are also stalls with handmade crafts, vinyls, art pieces and home decorations, furniture, books, plants and more.

They usually have food stalls and music so it's a really fun day out!

Mercatino del Usato

Mercatino del Usato could be put in just about every category on this page: it's a second-hand shop, a thrift-shop, an antique market, and a kind of flea market. 

This is a huge chain with locations around Rome and Italy.

There is no telling what you might find here.

You can even browse current stock and buy online.

Visit their website here to see all their stores and opening days/hours, which vary by location.

Borghetto Flaminio

Borghetto Flaminio is a large outdoor flea market that takes place every Sunday, not far from Piazza del Popolo.

You'll find a jumble of everything from jewellery to clothing, from "junk" to name brands.

Antiques and antique markets in Rome

You will find antiques at the Porta Portese flea market, Mercato Monti Urban market, Mercatino del Usato, and the market on Via Sannio, all noted on this page.

If you are looking for places or areas to specifically purchase antiques, you can visit these:

Ponte Milvio antique market

Every Sunday overlooking the Tiber, starting from the Ponte Milvio bridge, there is an antiques market, with all sorts of antiques on display.

Mercato delle Stampe

The Mercato delle Stampe is close to Piazza Navona, and is an excellent spot for antique books, vintage prints, stamps and other small antiques.

Via dei Coronari

Via dei Coronari is one of my favorite streets in Rome, period.

It's a charming cobblestone street dotted with antique shops, cafés, gelato shops, picturesque doorways, and an old-world Rome vibe.

Yes, it's become pretty touristy in recent years.

But that hasn't changed its allure.

Via dei Coronari used to be THE street for antique dealers.

You could not go 10 feet without running into an antique shop.

Sadly, many of these shops have gone out of business.

But you will still find quite a few dealers left.

Sometimes their shops are closed but there is a sign in the window with a phone number if you want to make an appointment.

Via del Boschetto

A friend of mine who is an antique dealer in Rome has shown me many antique furniture and lighting shops on via del Boschetto (Monti neighborhood, near the Colosseum).

As with via dei Coronari, above, via del Boschetto used to have many more antique shops than it does today.

The Monti neighborhood has lots of the best vintage shops in Rome, so this area is still an excellent destination for antiquing, as well as poking into little boutiques, wine bars, and cafés.
